Shinichi Sakurai (Sadao Abe) is married to Kanako (Kyoko Fukada) and they have a daughter named Kaori (Mikuu Yamada). Both, Shinichi and Kanako received only a middle school level education. Even though they don't have much money, they are a happy family. At work though, Shinichi experiences effects of only having a middle school education.
One day, Shinichi sees Kaori’s poor score for a national test. He freaks out and decides to improve Kaori's education. Thus, 41-year-old Shinichi begins studying with Kaori and instructs her for the upcoming middle school entrance exam.
In the late Tokugawa Shogunate, Asa was born as the second daughter of a wealthy merchant in Kyoto, Japan. Later, in Osaka, Asa entered various business fields like coal mines, banks, life insurance. She also founded the first female university in Japan.
In 1930 and as a young child, Tsuneko Kohashi lives at Enshu in Shizuoka Prefecture. She has a happy life with her parents and two younger sisters. Things change after her father dies from tuberculosis. Her father asked Tsuneko Kohashi to take care of the family in his place. Due to financial difficulties, her mother Kimiko decides to move the family to Tokyo where Tsuneko's grandmother lives.
In Tokyo, Tsuneko eventually graduates from school. She begins to work at small publishing company and learns editing. By 1945, Tsuneko decides to publish a magazine for women with the help of her two younger sisters. Her sisters do not know anything about the publishing world. A man then appears in front of them. The man is Isaji Hanayama.
Kazuya Takajo (Sho Sakurai) was a promising soccer player. At the age of 23, he was selected for the national A football team and he bought a house to live with his fiancé Miki Nakagawa (Masami Nagasawa). One day, Kazuya Takajo gets into a car accident and becomes paralyzed. He must now spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He falls into deep despair. At that time, Miki shows him their marriage certificate.
Kazuya goes through rehab on the strength of his wife's love. Yet, he becomes frustrated by those opposed to his marriage with Miki and others who give him pity looks. He also can't find anything to replace soccer in his life. Kazuya then witnesses a wheelchair basketball game at a gym.
Hundreds of years after Yoshihiko (Takayuki Yamada) saved the world from the God of Darkness Desutaku, the world changes into the dark age again. Yoshihiko and his group are revived by Buddha's power and travel all over the world. Can they save the world again?
Nobuko (Sayuri Yoshinaga) works in Nagasaki, Japan as a midwife. Her son died 3 years earlier from the atomic bomb. On August 9, 1948, her son appears in front of her again. Since that time, Koji (Kazunari Ninomiya) appears in front of her and they reminiscence about pleasant times. These happy, but bizarre moments seem eternal.
This time our protaganist Inogashira Goro (Matsushige Yutaka) working at the start of the New Year. It starts with a strange dream while taking a short nap inside his car. The dream reminded him how hungry he feels so he goes in search of an eatery. He tries to revisit two of the shops where he went before but for reasons, he cannot eat there. In vain, he goes about his business in Nakano, Nakano Ward but in the end, his hunger gets the best of him. He decides to settle for any good shop he can find within the area. Good thing he found a nearby shop called "Saisai Shokudou" which serves delicious Shanghai home cooked meals. Unfamiliar with the cuisine, he asks proprietress (Miyazaki Yoshiko) to help him choose the dishes... Later in the day, he goes to Tsudanuma, Chiba Prefecture where persistent client Sugihara (Kitamura Soichiro) asks him to stay at an office to continue working on a proposal. Goro is annoyed but begrudgingly complies, and gets to work. Before he knows it, it is already late in the night. Feeling hungry once again, he goes off to find some place to eat. He discovers a steakhouse called "Texas". Goro cannot help but leave his work behind, and partake of scrumptious late night steak dinner. Restaurant manager (Wada Masato) teaches him how to eat their steak, "Texas"-style...
Remi Takasugi (Ayame Gouriki) works for "Rental Lovers" which offers women for dates. She is the most popular woman at the company. Remi Takasugi carries out requests from her customers, but she does not provide sexual service. She figures out her customer's tastes and becomes the ideal date for her them. When she finishes her work, she never smiles and she wears bandage around her neck.
Michiko Daimon (Ryoko Yonekura) goes up against Shigekatsu Hiruma (Toshiyuki Nishida). Shigekatsu Hiruma is a new director for the best university hospital in Japan and also bears a deep grudge against Michiko Daimon.
